The countries would continue to develop ties in culture, education and tourism.
The implementation of the planned Russian-Cuban projects in railway transport will enable the island nation to triple passenger traffic, Russian Ambassador in Havana Andrey Guskov told Sputnik last Tuesday.
“JSC ‘Russian Railways’ and Union of Railways of Cuba are planning to sign a contract for works, services and deliveries of construction, train vehicles, equipment and materials within the framework of the project on restoration and modernization of the railway infrastructure of the Republic of Cuba. This ambitious project will help to triple passenger traffic in the country, and double cargo traffic,” Guskov said.
As an example of cooperation, the ambassador referred to deliveries by JSC “Sinara – Transport Machines” (STM) of locomotives and spare parts to Cuba. He noted that the company was expected to deliver seven more locomotives and a RA-26 railbus on January 3.
Guskov added that Russian companies were also “interested in participating in the reconstruction of Cuban plants for production of nickel products and nitrogen fertilizers with the use of Russian technologies and equipment.
“He expressed hope that the two countries would reach relevant definitive agreements in 2019.
The ambassador also recalled that bilateral trade totaled $245.7 billion in January-October 2018, and added that the “potential of cooperation is far from being exhausted” given excellent ties between the two nations at a political level.
Speaking about humanitarian cooperation, Guskov said that the countries would continue to develop ties in culture, education and tourism.
He mentioned Russian scholarships for Cuban nationals, future mutual participation in FITCuba International Tourism Fair in Havana and the Moscow International travel & Tourism Exhibition, as well as the upcoming Cuban Film Week in Russia as examples of such cooperation.
