The main director of the Hemingway Nautical Club of Cuba, Commodore José M. Díaz Escrich, asserted in recent days that the country has excellent natural conditions to strongly impact the world recreational nautical market.

According to the official, the Greater Antilles can enhance this vacation segment since it has 4,195 keys and islets that represent 110,922 square kilometers, in addition to 70,000 square kilometers of insular platform.

Currently, there are nine defined regions for the development of nautical and ecosystem studies, and the Northeast and Northwest areas stand out for their potential for tourism, in particular Jardines del Rey, Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago.

The country is navigable in 70 percent by vessels of 26 feet in length (long) and there are 40 percent of anchorages in bag bays, both on the north coast and on the south, he said .

Díaz Escrich added that the island has 3,900 kilometers of coral reef and 50 species of corals, in addition to an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, the wind speed ranges between 10 and 15 knots, and sailing can be practiced 300 days a year.

He added that there are 62 urban and 244 rural settlements with more than two million inhabitants in coastal places, not counting the number of inhabitants of Havana, which exceeds two million people.

Other data released by the director indicated that Cuba manages 30 ports and sub-ports, 37 fishing piers and 20 shipyards, and with respect to tourism it has 15 marinas and eight nautical bases.
