Whale-watching season starts in Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- Dominicans and foreigners alike will be able till this month to observe the humpback whales which visit the Atlantic coast. Environment minister Ernesto Reyna affirms the whale watching season will mean more income for northeastern Samaná and Hato Mayor provinces. The season lasts until March and draws around 30,000 foreign and Dominican tourists who eagerly take to boats and observation spots to watch the cetaceans, which come from the waters off Iceland, Greenland, Canada, to the Caribbean region.
Samaná Bay’s Humpback Whales Sanctuary is located in the country’s Northeast, where around 3,000 of the marine mammals mate and calve along the Atlantic coast, between December and April. (Source: Dominican Today)
