Barbados launched Tourism Week with a call to workers against laziness
Bridgetown.- In a sermon at the People's Cathedral during the launched of Barbadian Tourism week, Reverend Andre Symmonds said Barbadian workers needed to avoid "the bad habits" that had plagued the business around the world, just like pilfering, absenteeism, laziness and poor service.Symmonds urged workers to practice "honesty, not to shirk work, to give of their best and not to be concerned about the deceptively appealing wages of "the wicked".
"See that your employer prospers," he said. " . . . Make them look good and watch God cause them to make you look good."
Referring to a Bible characterization, the reverend said slack habits and sloppy work could be as destructive as vandalism. He described laziness as "one of the chief enemies" of personal and business success.
According to Symmonds, lazy people were "expensive to maintain". They quit before jobs were done and "unfinished projects filled their lives".
They were also "masters of excuses" for not working, including the saying that it was too nice a day to work and one that would be better spent at the beach.
"Whatever your work, do it conscientiously," he suggested.
He said in some businesses the poor attitudes to work and service were a cause for concern among people who love Barbados.
The Barbadian Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy used the church service to remind Barbadians that the industry had fared reasonably well, despite the global economic downturn. It had not experienced "the horror stories" of a number of tourism destinations, including some in the region, he pointed out. (Source: Daily Nation)
