Tourism in Barbados helps to maintain employment levels
Bridgetown.- The Barbadian Tourism Sector has been able to maintain employment levels as a result of Government's $25 million fund. The president of the Barbados Hotel & Tourism Association (BHTA), Wayne Capaldi said although business is down in the sector, the situation is not as bad as had been originally projected.
Capaldi said the first tranche of $15 million was distributed in April and the remainder would follow within this week. During discussion on the economy on Starcom Network's call-in programmed Down To Brass Tacks, Capaldi added that government's lifeline had largely assisted hotels in not resorting to mass layoffs.
However he explained that the level of discounting across the sector had meant that in reality tourism earnings were down significantly. He said the total initial claims against the fund were $39.5 million from 37 businesses across the sector. (Source: DailyNation)
